Idiom Story:
During the reign of Emperor Hedi of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the powerful Dowager Dou wielded immense influence, controlling the court through her brother, Dou Xian, who held the position of Grand General. The Dou family’s control extended to many key military and administrative positions, creating a concentration of power that alarmed many court officials.
Among these concerned officials was Ding Hong, a high-ranking minister who was deeply troubled by the Dou family’s dominance and its potential threat to the stability of the Han Dynasty. Determined to address this issue, Ding Hong waited for an opportune moment to act.
When an eclipse occurred, which was interpreted as an ominous sign, Ding Hong seized the opportunity to present a memorial to Emperor Hedi. In his memorial, he highlighted the dangers posed by the Dou family’s unchecked power and recommended immediate action to curb their influence.
Emperor Hedi, who had already been contemplating the need for reform, took Ding Hong’s advice seriously. As a result, he swiftly removed Dou Xian from his position and took measures to dismantle the Dou family’s control. Dou Xian and his brothers were subsequently forced to commit suicide.
In his memorial, Ding Hong advised the emperor that political reforms should address issues at their initial signs to prevent them from developing into larger problems. By acting early, the emperor could ensure the long-term stability of the state.
The phrase “防微杜渐” thus came to signify the importance of preventing small issues from growing into significant problems by addressing them promptly.
