Idiom Story:
Liú Bāng’s (刘邦) grandson, Liú Ān (刘安), was a philosopher and writer of the Western Han Dynasty, who inherited the title of King of Huainan. He had a passion for reading and playing the qin (a traditional Chinese string instrument), and was known for his quick wit. He once gathered thousands of experts in military strategy, astronomy, medicine, mathematics, and divination to collectively compile a vast book known as 《鸿烈》 (Hong Lie), also referred to as 《淮南子》 (Huainanzi).
In one chapter titled 《汜论训》 (Discussion on the Flow), the text discusses the development of human society, emphasizing a fundamental perspective that aligns with historical materialism. The passage states that our ancestors originally lived in caves and by rivers, dressed in very simple clothing, and endured a difficult existence. Eventually, enlightened sages emerged, leading people to construct palaces and homes that offered protection from the elements. These sages also taught people how to create farming tools and weapons, improving their livelihoods and providing greater security than before.
Later, the sages established rituals and music, creating a variety of rules that helped people develop etiquette and social norms. This illustrates that society is continually evolving, and people do not live in the same way indefinitely.
Thus, if ancient systems become unsuitable, they should be abolished; conversely, contemporary practices that are beneficial should be promoted. Just as countless rivers originating from different sources ultimately converge into the sea, the diverse endeavors of individuals all aim to better govern society and achieve a more prosperous life.
