It recounts the story of the two sons of King Guzhu, Bo Yi and Shu Qi, who chose to forgo their claims to power in favor of integrity and principles. Rather than eat the grains of the Zhou Dynasty, which they deemed unworthy, they ultimately starved to death on Mount Shouyang, exemplifying their commitment to virtue.
Confucius held Bo Yi and Shu Qi in high esteem, praising their character in Lunyu (《论语》). In passages such as Gongye Chang and Shu Er, he noted, “Bo Yi and Shu Qi do not dwell on past grievances; thus, their resentment is rare. Seeking virtue and attaining it, what is there to resent?” This implies that their focus on virtue allowed them to rise above personal grievances.
In the Biography of Bo Yi, Sima Qian writes: “Although Bo Yi and Shu Qi were virtuous, their fame was enhanced by Confucius. Yan Yuan, though diligent in learning, became more distinguished by following the noble.”
