Idiom Meaning: This idiom describes someone who remains enthusiastic and tireless about their favorite activity, regardless of the time and energy it consumes.

Idiom Story:
During the late Western Han period, Wang Mang usurped the throne and established the Xin Dynasty, which proved to be even more corrupt and oppressive than its predecessor. This led to widespread discontent and eventually a massive peasant uprising.
Liu Xiu, a member of the Han royal family from Nanyang, saw an opportunity to restore the Han Dynasty. He joined forces with the rebels and fought against Wang Mang’s regime. Liu Xiu displayed remarkable bravery, often leading charges and fighting on the front lines. His leadership was crucial in defeating the enemy, including a significant victory at Kunyang, where his forces defeated 400,000 troops. After several years of conflict, Liu Xiu succeeded in restoring the Han Dynasty and established the Eastern Han Dynasty with its capital at Luoyang.
As Emperor Guangwu of Han, Liu Xiu focused on revitalizing the Han Dynasty, learning from past experiences, and addressing the suffering of the people. He implemented reforms, abolished harsh laws, restored order, and promoted economic recovery. Even in his old age, Liu Xiu remained dedicated to his duties. He would start his day before dawn and work until late into the evening, immersing himself in studying and discussing important texts.
His son, Crown Prince Liu Zhuang, expressed concern over his father’s rigorous schedule, advising him to take it easier for the sake of his health. Liu Xiu, however, responded with a smile, saying: “I delight in this work and do not feel tired.” His commitment to his duties, driven by personal enthusiasm, made the strenuous effort seem effortless to him.
The phrase “乐此不疲” (lè cǐ bù pí) evolved from Liu Xiu’s expression, signifying a deep and enduring passion for an activity that one finds so fulfilling that it never feels burdensome, regardless of the effort involved.
