Idiom Story:

During the late Eastern Han Dynasty, a notable scholar from Xiangyang named Pang De Gong had a highly talented nephew named Pang Tong. At that time, Zhuge Liang, who was living in seclusion in Longzhong, often visited Pang De Gong and formed a close friendship with Pang Tong. Pang De Gong admired both their talents, referring to Zhuge Liang as “Sleeping Dragon” and Pang Tong as “Phoenix Chick.” In his eyes, they were both exceptional figures of their time.

When Zhou Yu was the governor of Nanjun, Pang Tong served as his assistant. After Zhou Yu’s death, Pang Tong accompanied him to Wu Jun for burial. Many literary figures in Wu Jun had already heard of Pang Tong’s reputation, so when he was preparing to return to Nanjun, they all came to see him off. Among them were prominent scholars like Lu Ji, Gu Shao, and Quan Zong.

The gathering took place at Changmen, where they engaged in lively discussions about history and literature. During the conversation, the eminent scholars asked Pang Tong to comment on the personalities of those present. He began with Lu Ji, saying, “Mr. Lu is like a horse that can’t run fast but possesses strong stamina and remarkable talent.” The scholars agreed with his insightful assessment.

Next, he evaluated Gu Shao, saying, “Mr. Gu is akin to a slow-moving but hardworking ox, able to carry heavy burdens over long distances.” When someone asked him to assess himself, Pang Tong, with a hint of pride, stated, “I am capable of advising emperors and managing the world.”

This story highlights the significance of “负重致远,” emphasizing the virtue of bearing burdens and responsibilities in pursuit of great achievements.
